Home is Forward Hiking and Travel Adventures from Around the World Green Giant Travels Book 2 eBook Gary Sizer

Ever since I was a kid I have enjoyed reading novels. Some of my favorites as a young adult in the 1970s were the “Leatherstocking” series penned by James Fenimore Cooper, books such as “The Last of the Mohicans” where I could immerse myself in the outdoors, walking step-by-step with the characters as they lived the outdoor experience.
Fast forward to my later years where in my own life I have at times enjoyed the intensity of whitewater, the thrills of bike riding, and the immense satisfaction one gets from hiking in the mountains, camera slung over my shoulder, awaiting the excitement of rounding that next bend in the trail. So I was filled with much anticipation when I heard through the grapevine that Gary Sizer, a fellow Boatertalker friend, was going to quit his job and hike the AT Trail, perhaps writing about his adventures afterwards.
Well, Gary did not disappoint! Once again, while reading “Where’s the Next Shelter?” I was walking step-by-step through the forests, seeing the wonders that Gary saw, making friends with his characters, feeling his pain at times. When I had finished, I realized it would probably be a long time before I would experience the same emotions from reading a book.
Well, a short year or two later, I have just finished reading Gary’s latest yarn, “Home is Forward”. And I can honestly say that he better start writing again, because I need another fix!
Written as a prequel to his hike of the AT Trail, we really get to know how Gary arrived at the point in his life where he would undertake something as arduous as hiking non-stop for half a year. It is so easy to relate to Gary’s style of living, making us feel the joy of his travels, his pondering of what makes us happy, and the satisfaction of undertaking what sometimes seems impossible for “ordinary” people making our way through the universe.
I may never hike in Peru, climb over a glacier, or see the Northern lights, but Gary has inspired me to try! The next time I am hiking in the Smokies, I will remember how Gary looks at life, visualize through his eyes what to look for, hoping to grasp the same exuberance from my experience. Thanks for sharing your memories!

Home is Forward Hiking and Travel Adventures from Around the World Green Giant Travels Book 2 eBook Gary Sizer Reviews

Full disclosure - The author is a family friend. I had downloaded "Home is Forward" on Unlimited and had never gotten around to reading it. During an impromptu dinner while I traveled through Asheville to escape hurricane Irma, Gary kindly signed a print copy of the book for me. I admitted to him that I hadn't read his first book "Where is the Next Shelter?" as I had followed his blog during his trek of the Appalachian Trail every day as he walked it. He responded with his huge ear-to-ear smile and said "Perfect! This book is the prequel! Read it first."

He then gently explained that his blog and his book were not the same. Fortunately, after reading this book I can't wait to devour the Appalachian Trail book. That said, I don't normally write bad reviews. I've had bad reviews before, and they're no fun - so my philosophy is there are plenty of people out there to write the bad ones, I only write a review if I at least like a product or a book (unless it's really a stinker). So if I hadn't at least liked it (3-stars), I wouldn't be reviewing it. I really did love this book, and I am so glad I read it.

I'm adventurous, but I LOVE creature comforts. So, I now can nearly guarantee you I will never hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu (or even take the train, as the thought of elevation sickness makes it seem grueling.) I understand why my 5-star only hotel friends didn't really love Iceland. And more importantly, I have an even greater understanding of what makes Gary and Katie such an amazing couple, and such fascinating people. I loved living their adventures vicariously through this book.

This takes even the most seasoned city-dweller (me) down many muddy, insect laden, dangerous trails I would never consider attempting. Clearly written, witty, always entertaining and educational (not ever in a dull classroom sort of way) this book kind of makes me want to wear the same socks for 3 days in a row then turn them inside out to see if they really are as good as a fresh pair!

It provides life lessons without ever feeling didactic. If I was thinking of entering the military, I would want to read this first. If I was thinking of taking up camping, hiking Newfoundland, astronomy, spelunking, glacier climbing in Iceland or seeking out the Northern Lights, I would read this first. If I had the chance to go back 40 years in time and could live life again, I would read this first - I might have taken a few more chances. We're off to Hawaii for two weeks soon, so perhaps I'll take a dip near a waterfall instead of just posting an Instagram shot from my iPhone - or maybe I'll extend my stay if the woods speaks to me.

As "someday is always now or never" this book dovetails well into the life of anyone seeking to be more in the "now." I have friends in the mindfulness community who will love this book.

So I've gushed like an Icelandic geysir (no spellcheck thanks, I meant to spell it that way. I learned that in the book!) Every word and every star is sincere. Great read!
Love the book!
Gary Sizer is a great story teller and makes you want to get out and DO what he is doing! The adventures he and his friends have been on will leave you planning your next adventure after finishing the book. I’ve read his first book, Where’s the Next Shelter, twice and now this one. I always enjoy books like this and greatly appreciate the authors letting us into their worlds! Wonderful sense of humor and laugh out loud moments. Two thumbs up!
Gary Sizer has captured my attention yet again with his new book "Home is Forward". Just like "Where's the Next Shelter", it is witty and full of humorous stories involving hilarious characters. This book will leave you questioning when your next adventure should start and why you haven't already started it. Loved every second of reading this book.
Loved the book. It was a fun and entertaining listen. I wished it was longer because it was so good the time just flew by.
This was such a fun book to read. Every paragraph held my interest. In fact, I even had to put my quilting on hold in order to keep reading. So interesting!!!!
